St. Peter’s Church of Ireland, Drogheda On this graveyard’s back wall is a rare cadaver stone dating from the early 16th Century. These gruesome effigies became popular after the Black Death and subsequent plagues. It’s a Memento mori; a reminder of our mortality and the inevitability of death. It originally laid flat and depicted the wealthy Sir Edmond Goldyng and his wife Elizabeth Fleming. The funeral shrouds, closed at the top and bottom, have fallen open to show an emaciated male and female
